The 63-Year-Old Who Rode Niagara Falls in a Barrel

On her 63rd birthday, October 24, 1901, schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor became the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

Annie Edson Taylor was broke, widowed, and running out of options — so she decided to become famous by doing something no one had ever survived. On the morning of October 24, 1901, her 63rd birthday (though she told the newspapers she was 42), the former schoolteacher climbed into a custom-built barrel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, was towed toward the Horseshoe Falls, and let the current take her over the edge.

The barrel was an engineering project in its own right: oak, bound with iron, lined with a mattress and fitted with a leather harness to hold her in place. Taylor had used a bicycle pump to compress the air inside. Two days earlier, she had sent a cat over the falls in the same barrel to prove it could be done — the cat survived, reportedly no worse for the trip.

What happened next took less than twenty seconds and made her immortal. The barrel shot over the 167-foot cataract, was battered through the churning water at its base, and finally bobbed to the surface downstream, where rescuers hauled it ashore and pried it open. Taylor climbed out with little more than a small gash on her head — the first person in history to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and live to tell about it.

The fame came, briefly. The fortune never did. Taylor had hoped the stunt would pay her debts and secure her old age — she had come to Niagara Falls with the barrel ride already in mind, calculating that a death-defying first would make her name. But the money she made from telling her story slipped away, and she spent her final years posing for photographs with tourists near the falls, a living souvenir of her own exploit. She died poor on April 29, 1921. Daredevils have followed her over the falls since — most of them far younger, none of them first, and not all of them surviving. At 63, Taylor remains one of the oldest people ever to attempt the plunge, and the first to live through it. The 'Queen of the Mist,' as the papers called her, kept her crown: the schoolteacher who, at 63, looked at the most famous waterfall on earth and decided to ride it.

The only verifiable portrait of Taylor is a portrait-format photograph too small for publication, so this story is published without an image.
