Operation Barbarossa: History's Largest Invasion

On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union with more than 3.8 million troops — the largest military offensive ever launched.

At 3:15 on the morning of Sunday, June 22, 1941, the largest invasion in human history began. Along a front stretching some 1,800 miles — from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea — more than 3.8 million German and Axis troops poured across the border into the Soviet Union. It was called Operation Barbarossa, and nothing like it had ever been seen.

The attack shattered a promise. Less than two years earlier, in 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had signed a non-aggression pact. Hitler tore it up. The operation was named for Frederick Barbarossa, the 12th-century Holy Roman Emperor nicknamed "red beard" — Hitler saw himself as heir to a thousand years of German empire-building, and the invasion's true goals were as ideological as they were military: to destroy communism, seize the Soviet Union's farmland and oil, and colonize its western lands with Germans at the expense of the Slavic peoples who lived there.

The assault came as a complete surprise — even though it shouldn't have. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had received repeated warnings, including from a German defector, but refused to believe Hitler would attack. "We only need to kick the door in," Hitler had boasted, "and the whole rotten structure will come tumbling down." In the first hours, German bombers caught thousands of Soviet aircraft still parked on the ground and destroyed them. Panzer divisions raced forward in three great thrusts — toward Leningrad in the north, Moscow in the center, and Ukraine in the south — and in the opening weeks they encircled and captured millions of Soviet soldiers.

Behind the advancing armies came something even darker: SS death squads that rounded up and murdered civilians, above all Soviet Jews, as the Holocaust spread east with the front. Millions of Soviet prisoners of war were deliberately starved or killed. Barbarossa was not only the largest military operation ever attempted — it opened the Eastern Front, the deadliest land war in history.

But the door did not come tumbling down. The Soviet Union, vast and determined, absorbed the blow. As autumn turned to a brutal winter, German supply lines stretched to breaking, and the Red Army held before Moscow. The operation ended on December 5, 1941, with more than 8 million casualties on both sides — and the invasion a failure in its main goal.

Operation Barbarossa changed the entire shape of World War II. It brought the Soviet Union into the Allied camp, turning the war into a truly global struggle, and it doomed Nazi Germany to a two-front war it could not win. June 22, 1941 stands as a warning written in millions of lives: wars of conquest, however carefully planned, devour their makers.
